Eighth Grade Courses

Eighth Grade Curriculum and Content

All 8th grade students at Tucker Creek Middle School will participate in  Language Arts, Social Studies and Science classes.  Based on placement, students will either take 8th Grade Math or Math I during their eighth grade year.  If students take Math I it counts as a math credit for high school, alllowing the student to take an advanced math at the high school level.  Below is an overview of the eighth grade classes and links to the Parent Guides to the NC Standards for each course.   

Language Arts

The Common Core State Standards are evidence-based; consequently, students learn to value evidence to accomplish educational goals. In the sixth grade, students demonstrate mastery of skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and language throughout the year. Students become sophisticated readers and engage with a variety of text types, including literacy and informational texts. They focus on reading comprehension and experience increased opportunities for collaborative learning. Students write for a variety of audiences and purposes and use informational resources and technology to develop their reading, writing and speaking skills. Students apply conventions of Standard English in a variety of formats, develop academic language to effectively present information, and demonstrate understanding of relationships among words, in a variety of situations.  Students must take the End-of-Grade test.

Instruction and learning in Math focuses on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; and (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.  Students must take the Grade 8 End-of-Grade test.

NC Math 1

NC Math 1 formalizes and extends the mathematics that students learned in previous grades.  Understandings of linear relationships are deepened and extended, in part, by contrasting them with other functional relationships and, in part, by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend.  Exponential and quadratic functional relationships are introduced.  Students must take the NC Math 1 End-of-Course.

Science 8

The 8th grade science curriculum aims to engage students in an in-depth study of: physical properties and behaviors of elements, compounds and mixtures; managing energy resources; structure of the hydrosphere and impacting human interactions; history of the Earth and evolution of its landforms and life forms; basic characteristics, treatment and prevention methods of agents of diseases; dynamics of population survival; healthy food as an organism’s energy source for growth and repair; and uses of biotechnology.  Students must take the End-of-Grade test.

Social Studies 8

Historical study connects students to the enduring themes and issues of our past and equips them to meet the challenges they will face as citizens in a state, nation and an interdependent world. The essential standards for eighth grade integrates United States history with the study of North Carolina history. This integrated study helps students understand and appreciate the legacy of our democratic republic and to develop skills needed to engage responsibly and intelligently as North Carolinians. This course serves as a stepping stone for more intensive study in high school. Students in eighth grade continue to build on the fourth and fifth grade introductions to North Carolina and the United States by embarking on a more rigorous study of the historical foundations and democratic principles that continue to shape our state and nation. Students begin with a review of the major ideas and events preceding the foundation of North Carolina and the United States. The main focus of the course will be the critical events, personalities, issues and developments in the state and nation from the Revolutionary Era to contemporary times. Inherent in this study is an analysis of the relationship of geography, events and people to the political, economic, technological, and cultural developments that shaped our existence in North Carolina and the United States over time.  Students must take the NC Final Exam.
