Sixth Grade Courses

All 6th grade students at Tucker Creek Middle School will be participate in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies classes.  Below is information about each class and hyperlinks to the Parent Guide to the standards for each course.  Our teachers use the NC Standard Course of Study to guide their instruction, under the leadership of county pacing guides.   

 

Language Arts

The Common Core State Standards are evidence-based; consequently, students learn to value evidence to accomplish educational goals. In the sixth grade, students demonstrate mastery of skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and language throughout the year. Students become sophisticated readers and engage with a variety of text types, including literacy and informational texts. They focus on reading comprehension and experience increased opportunities for collaborative learning. Students write for a variety of audiences and purposes and use informational resources and technology to develop their reading, writing and speaking skills. Students apply conventions of Standard English in a variety of formats, develop academic language to effectively present information, and demonstrate understanding of relationships among words, in a variety of situations.  Students must take the End-of-Grade test.

Math

Instruction and learning in Math 6 focuses on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.  Students must take the Grade 6 End-of-Grade test.

Science

The 6th grade science curriculum challenges students to learn the properties and processes of: waves and wavelike energy of earthquakes, light and sound; matter; energy transfer and interactions of matter and energy; celestial bodies and their predictable motions; the lithosphere and forces impacting its changes; plants and their behaviors for survival; and the flow of energy through ecosystems.  Students must take the NC Final Exam.

Social Studies 6

Students in sixth grade continue to expand the knowledge, skills and understanding acquired in the fourth and fifth grade studies of North Carolina and the United States by connecting those studies to their first formal look at a study of the world. Sixth graders focus heavily on the discipline of geography by using the themes of location, place, movement, human-environment interaction and region to understand the emergence, expansion and decline of civilizations and societies from the beginning of human existence to the Age of Exploration. Students take a systematic look at the history and culture of various world regions including the development of economic, political and social systems through the lens of change and continuity. As students examine the various factors that shaped the development of civilizations, societies and regions in the ancient world, they examine both similarities and differences among these areas. A conscious effort is made to integrate various civilizations, societies and regions from every continent (Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia and the Americas). During this study, students learn to recognize and interpret the “lessons of history”, those transferable understandings that are supported throughout time by recurring themes and issues.  Students must take the NC Final Exam.
